The Dragon's Home

He stands above his city, tall, majestic, unwavering and loyal. He stays when needed, and when enemies approach, he flies out, bathing the foe in fiery death, leaving not a man of them but roasting in his armor.

This mighty creature! What will he not protect in this city? And yet, why does he do so? Is not this city, like any other, a cesspool of horrid deeds and greedy thoughts? Nay, not this. For in all this city, there is none to do such deeds, none to think such thoughts.

This city... it is a city of the dead. A city of long forgotten names, a city of sun-bleached bones. No cry is heard in all its streets, nor whisper in its dungeons. No song nor sound of harp nor poet's voice rings loud; all is silent, all is still.

Oh why does he stay, this glorious beast? What has he here but sorrow and lamentations, what lies here but death? What worth is there in empty halls, in cold and dreary stone? In broken strings and shattered glass, there is no joy, but pain. Why, then, oh why? Shall you waste your life away upon this bitter rock, fettered by these chains of loss?

I'll stay above this city, guarding what still the air may touch. With fire and wind, tooth and claw, with blood spilt upon the ground, I'll spend my life alone up here, alone below the clouds. For what shall I see but this? Who shall care for me? A monster I am to those that come, but not to those who stay. You see the bones upon the streets, but I see long gone friends. Shall I abandon those dear to me, and this place we shared and loved? Though their spirits are now long gone, yet their bodies remain, white and worn by sun and rain, for there's none to lay them to rest.

And so I'll stay, oh stranger, I'll stay and guard my haunts. I'll battle foes and weather storms, and sometimes sing a song. I'll watch over these lonely bones, I'll guard this place a while, until the sun has passed away, and Death has come to take me home.
